How to make an alpha layer

Sometimes the alpha layer that comes with a purchased garment does not fit exactly and I’ve had to try alpha layers from different products to get something close enough that worked for me. But then came the time when I had to make my own and couldn’t figure out how ! It’s really pretty simple and probably comes easy if you’re a clothes-maker and are very familiar with clothing templates, but if you’ve almost never come near one in your entire SLife, then it’s hard to just guess.

I had to make an alpha layer yesterday; though I had tried to google this several times in the past I never found anything that explained me exactly how to, so now that I’ve had help figuring it out, I’ll show you too, for those out there who might be as helpless as I am. This is for Photoshop, but it’s probably much the same in The Gimp.

PoseAnywhere 2

I have been using Tillie’s Posing Stand for over a year, maybe two, and I wanted to try and get the new PoseAnywhere HUD by DavidThomas Scorbal that is out now at Pose Fair, to see if I might like it more. I’ll do a little comparison of the features here.

You can see how PoseAnywhere works in these two videos: 1 and 2.

Adding poses. When you unpack the HUD and have watched each video once or twice, it really is easy to get started. There are three ways to add poses to your HUD and I chose to use the Pose Installer because I wanted to start with poses already in my inventory I knew I would use. I started with my (pda) ones; I dropped 5 copyable poses on the Installer, plus 2 no-copy ones. You can see in the picture: the Installer counts 7 poses total, but after installing, the HUD lists only 5 (click to view larger). That’s because the no-copy poses could not be copied over to the HUD, which makes sense and is definitely a plus for me, because it’s not infrequent for me to add a no-copy pose without paying attention and then cause my HUD to become no-copy, which always worries me in case I lose it or accidentally delete it. If you want to take the no-copy poses back, they’ll still be in the contents of the Installer. Some people might not care if their HUD goes no-copy, though, and might still like to get their no-copy poses inside the HUD, but I don’t think that’s possible, because you can’t drop poses directly in the HUD, it seems.

The way it used to be

Kari released a fun HUD for photography that lets you create snapshots on the fly with a vintage feel, by applying colour filters, dusty or scratched overlays and all sorts of frames, from slides, to polaroids and negatives. It’s like bringing the iPhone Instagram into SL !

You can see how the HUD works by watching this video here. I really love the on/off button, so convenient to reframe a shot or move things around in your view. All future updates are included in the price of 500L and then you get 3 old camera replicas too, plus one to wear strapped around your neck.

Here’s how the pictures come straight out of SL, with no fancy shadows, just a bit of Windlight:

Polaroid + lightleak.

Polaroid + scratches.

120mm + lightleak.

RC Cluster

Ever since I began this blog I always intended in the back of my mind to make a post showing all my favourite toys from RC Cluster, but my RC folder was so big (it’d now cover half of my screen if I wanted to visualise it all in my inventory) that I always found the task too daunting, and I would postpone it, postpone it some more, until it never got done. Well now, RC Cluster is closing ! So, I shook myself into action and finally did my post, although sadly it’ll be a goodbye post.

Pam pam pam

More fun free AOs from Kuso ! Only two days left to grab them up.

Please excuse the stupid HUDs on my screen, I wish there was a shortkey to hide those when filming with the UI off.

Holiday Sport Cruiser

Today featuring a very luxurious item by Brookston Holiday, the Sports Cruiser. The craftmanship here is beyond remarkable, and for all that you get, from an equipped kitchen to a spacious double sitting area as well as some cosily ensconced sleeping quarters, 3000L is a pretty affordable price tag. I think the pictures speak for themselves, but for a closer look, you can see the demo at HOLIDAYS MODERN YACHTS. Stunning work !
